Free Online BMI Calculator

DigiSadhan’s BMI Calculator is a free online tool that helps you calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI) using your height and weight. BMI is a commonly used weight-to-height indicator for adults and can provide a quick reference for understanding whether your weight falls within an underweight, normal-weight, overweight or obesity range.

The calculator is useful for:

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines BMI as weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared (kg/m²).

Important: BMI is a screening measure, not a diagnosis. It does not directly measure body fat and may not accurately reflect body composition in every individual, including people with high muscle mass.

What is BMI?

BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It is a numerical value calculated from a person’s weight and height.

BMI provides a simple way to categorize weight status at the population and individual screening level. For adults, WHO commonly uses 18.5–24.9 as the normal-weight range, 25.0–29.9 as overweight/pre-obesity, and 30.0 or higher as obesity.

BMI should be interpreted with other factors such as waist circumference, body composition, age, sex, lifestyle and overall health.

BMI Calculation Formula

Metric Formula

The standard BMI formula is:

BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height² (m²)

For example:

Weight = 70 kg

Height = 1.75 m

BMI:

70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75)

= 70 ÷ 3.0625

= 22.86 kg/m²

Therefore, the calculated BMI is approximately 22.9.

WHO provides the same calculation method and example for a 70 kg adult with a height of 1.75 m.

BMI Formula in Pounds and Inches

If weight is entered in pounds and height in inches, the formula is:

BMI = Weight (lb) ÷ Height² (in) × 703

Example

Weight = 154 lb

Height = 69 inches

BMI:

154 ÷ (69 × 69) × 703

22.74

The metric and imperial formulas are mathematically equivalent when the appropriate conversion factor is used.

Adult BMI Categories

For adults, the commonly used WHO categories are:

BMICategory
Below 18.5Underweight
18.5–24.9Normal Weight
25.0–29.9Overweight / Pre-obesity
30.0–34.9Obesity Class I
35.0–39.9Obesity Class II
40.0+Obesity Class III

WHO identifies BMI of 25 or higher as overweight and 30 or higher as obesity in adults.

Example BMI Calculations

Example 1 – Normal BMI

Weight: 65 kg

Height: 1.70 m

BMI:

65 ÷ (1.70²)

= 65 ÷ 2.89

= 22.49

Category: Normal Weight

Example 2 – Higher BMI

Weight: 90 kg

Height: 1.75 m

BMI:

90 ÷ (1.75²)

= 90 ÷ 3.0625

= 29.39

Category: Overweight / Pre-obesity

Calculate Healthy Weight Range from BMI

For adults, an approximate weight range corresponding to a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 can be calculated as:

Minimum Weight = 18.5 × Height²

Maximum Weight = 24.9 × Height²

Example

Height = 1.75 m

Minimum:

18.5 × 1.75²

= 56.66 kg

Maximum:

24.9 × 1.75²

= 76.26 kg

So, for this height, the BMI-based reference range is approximately 56.7–76.3 kg.

This is a mathematical BMI range, not a personalized medical recommendation.

Why is BMI Useful?

BMI is useful because it provides a simple and inexpensive screening indicator that can be calculated from two basic measurements: height and weight. WHO notes that increasing BMI is associated with increased risk for several noncommunicable diseases.

However, BMI does not distinguish between:

For example, a muscular athlete may have a higher BMI without having excess body fat.

BMI for Children and Teenagers

Adult BMI categories should not simply be applied to children and adolescents.

For children and teenagers, BMI interpretation depends on age and sex, and BMI-for-age growth references or percentiles are used. WHO specifically notes that BMI thresholds for children and adolescents differ from adult categories.

Parents and caregivers should consult an appropriate pediatric growth assessment rather than interpreting a child’s BMI using adult cutoffs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is BMI?

BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a weight-to-height index calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in metres squared.

What is a normal BMI?

For adults, WHO commonly defines 18.5–24.9 as the normal-weight BMI range.

Is BMI the same as body fat percentage?

No. BMI uses height and weight, while body-fat percentage estimates the proportion of body weight that is fat.

Is a high BMI always unhealthy?

Not necessarily. BMI does not directly measure body fat and can be affected by muscle mass and other factors.

Can children use this BMI calculator?

BMI can be calculated for children, but adult BMI categories should not be used for children. Children require age- and sex-specific BMI-for-age interpretation.

Is the DigiSadhan BMI Calculator free?

Yes. DigiSadhan’s online BMI Calculator is free to use for general informational and educational purposes.

Adult BMI

BMI Calculation Formula

Metric Formula

BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height² (m²)

Weight = 70 kg

Height = 1.75 m

BMI:

70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75)

= 22.86

BMI Formula

BMI = Weight (lb) ÷ Height² (in) × 703

154 lb और 69 inches:

154 ÷ (69 × 69) × 703

22.74

Weight Range

Minimum Weight = 18.5 × Height²

Maximum Weight = 24.9 × Height²

Height = 1.75 m

Minimum:

18.5 × 1.75²

= 56.66 kg

Maximum:

24.9 × 1.75²

= 76.26 kg

BMI Calculator
