WPM Calculation – How Typing Speed Is Calculated
WPM means Words Per Minute. The standard typing-test convention used by the tool considers 5 characters, including spaces, as one word.
WPM Formula
WPM = (Total Characters Typed ÷ 5) ÷ Time in Minutes
Example
Suppose you type 600 characters in 2 minutes:
WPM = (600 ÷ 5) ÷ 2
WPM = 60
Therefore, your typing speed is 60 WPM.
For a more accurate real-time measurement, the elapsed time during the active test can be used:
Real-Time WPM = (Characters Typed ÷ 5) ÷ Elapsed Time in Minutes
Typing Accuracy Calculation
Typing accuracy shows how many characters you typed correctly compared with the total characters you entered.
Accuracy Formula
Accuracy = (Correct Characters ÷ Total Characters Typed) × 100
Example
If you type 500 characters and 475 are correct:
Accuracy = (475 ÷ 500) × 100
Accuracy = 95%
A higher accuracy percentage means you are making fewer typing mistakes.
Why Practice Typing?
Good typing skills can save time and increase productivity. Regular typing practice can help students complete assignments faster, enable professionals to prepare documents efficiently, and help writers, programmers and data-entry professionals work more comfortably.
Remember that accuracy is just as important as speed. Typing extremely fast with many mistakes can reduce productivity because additional time is required to correct errors. The DigiSadhan tool therefore displays both typing speed and accuracy to help you understand your overall performance.
