Calories are a way of expressing energy. During physical activity, the body uses energy to support movement, breathing, circulation, temperature regulation and the work performed by muscles. A calculator cannot directly measure that energy use from a web form, so this tool uses a standardized activity-intensity approach called MET. The goal is not to create a false sense of precision; the goal is to provide a practical estimate that can help users compare activities and understand the effect of duration and body weight.
A MET, or metabolic equivalent of task, expresses an activity's energy cost relative to a standard resting reference. The 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities organizes activities into major categories such as bicycling, conditioning exercise, dancing, home activities, occupation, running, sports and walking. This calculator first converts US pounds to kilograms when necessary. It then obtains the selected activity's MET value, applies the optional intensity adjustment, calculates the energy rate and multiplies it by the total exercise time. The final number is rounded only for display, while the internal calculation retains more precision.
For a fixed MET value and identical duration, a heavier person will generally receive a larger MET-based calorie estimate because the standard equation scales energy cost with body mass. That does not mean body weight alone determines actual energy expenditure. Movement economy, fitness, age, body composition, terrain, temperature, technique and individual physiology can all affect real-world energy use.
Duration has a direct effect. If the activity and body weight stay the same, doubling the duration approximately doubles the estimated energy expenditure. For example, 20 minutes at a given MET produces roughly half the estimate of 40 minutes at that same intensity. This simple relationship is useful for workout planning, but it should not be interpreted as a guarantee of exact calories burned.
Activity selection is one of the most important parts of this calculator. Walking is not one universal activity: pace, incline and terrain can change energy cost. Running also has different MET values at different speeds. Cycling can vary widely with resistance, speed, hills and whether the bike is stationary. Swimming varies with stroke and effort. The Compendium therefore lists multiple values for many activities rather than a single number for everything. This tool offers two display modes. Gross energy represents the full MET-based estimate for the selected activity period. The active-above-resting option subtracts the approximate energy associated with one MET during the same period. This distinction matters because your body uses energy even when you are not exercising. If a fitness tracker reports “active calories,” it may not match a gross estimate from a MET calculator.
The advanced intensity control allows a modest 85%–115% adjustment around the selected standard MET. It is deliberately limited because the Compendium's MET values are population-level standardized values and are not designed to precisely determine the energy cost of one individual's activity. Conditioning examples in the 2024 Compendium include general aerobic exercise, calisthenics, circuit training, elliptical training, resistance training, rowing and jump rope. Sports include activities such as badminton, basketball, boxing and many others. Home activities include sweeping, mopping, cleaning and playing with children. The calorie orb and progress bar are presentation aids. They animate when a new result is calculated to make the result transition noticeable, especially on mobile screens. They are not additional measurements. The calculator intentionally keeps the graphic simple so the main number remains easy to read.
Use a reasonably accurate current body weight, measure workout duration rather than total time spent at the gym, and choose the activity and effort level that best describes what you actually did. If your activity changes substantially during a session, calculate each segment separately and add the estimates. For example, a workout might include 10 minutes of walking, 20 minutes of running and 15 minutes of resistance training. Separate calculations can better represent a mixed session than forcing the entire workout into one activity category.
Wearables may use heart rate, accelerometer data, GPS, user profile information and proprietary algorithms. A MET calculator starts with a standardized activity value. The two methods can therefore produce different numbers. Neither number should automatically be treated as exact. A laboratory measurement such as indirect calorimetry is a different level of assessment and is not what this consumer calculator attempts to replicate.
Exercise is one part of energy balance, but calories burned during one workout should not be treated as a guaranteed amount of fat loss. Body weight changes are influenced by food intake, water, glycogen, digestion, activity outside workouts, sleep and many other factors. It is generally more useful to look at trends over time than to chase a precise calorie number from a single exercise session.
