A linear equation in two variables can be written in the form ax + by + c = 0, where a, b and c are real numbers and a and b are not both zero. A pair consists of two such equations. Two lines may intersect at one point, be parallel, or coincide. If they intersect at one point, the pair has a unique solution and is called consistent and independent. If the lines are parallel and distinct, there is no solution and the pair is inconsistent. If the two equations represent the same line, there are infinitely many solutions and the pair is consistent and dependent.
In the substitution method, first express one variable in terms of the other from one equation. Substitute that expression into the second equation. This produces an equation in one variable. Solve it and substitute the result back to obtain the other variable. Always verify the ordered pair in both original equations when accuracy matters.
The elimination method removes one variable by adding or subtracting suitable multiples of the equations. If the coefficients of one variable are already equal or opposites, the process is especially quick. Otherwise, multiply one or both equations by suitable constants before adding or subtracting them.
