1. Meaning of a Set

A set is a well-defined collection of objects. The objects are called elements or members. A student should be able to identify whether an object belongs to a set and write the relationship correctly. Curly braces are used to represent a set, and membership is commonly written with ∈.

x ∈ A means x is an element of A; x ∉ A means x is not an element of A.

2. Representation of Sets

Roster form lists the members explicitly. Set-builder form describes members using a condition. Practice should include translating between these forms and deciding whether a description is well-defined. Repeated elements do not create additional distinct members in a set.

3. Types of Sets

Important classifications include empty, singleton, finite, infinite, equal and equivalent sets. The empty set has no elements. A singleton contains one element. A is a subset of B when every element of A is also an element of B. Every set is a subset of itself and the empty set is a subset of every set. The power set is the collection of all subsets of a set.

5. Intervals

Intervals are useful for describing collections of real numbers. Square brackets indicate included endpoints and parentheses indicate excluded endpoints. Students should connect interval notation with number-line representations.

6. Union

The union A ∪ B contains elements that are in A, in B, or in both. A common element is included once in the resulting set. The union is visualized by combining the relevant regions in a Venn diagram.

A ∪ B = elements belonging to A or B or both.

7. Intersection

The intersection A ∩ B consists of elements common to both sets. If there is no common element, the intersection is empty. In a two-set Venn diagram, it is represented by the overlapping region.

A ∩ B = common elements of A and B.

8. Difference

A − B contains elements belonging to A but not B. Difference is not generally symmetric, so A − B can differ from B − A. Carefully reading the order of the expression prevents common mistakes.

9. Complement

The complement of A is defined with respect to a universal set U. It consists of elements in U that are not in A.

10. Venn Diagrams

Venn diagrams use circles inside a universal-set region to show relationships. Overlap represents intersection, combined regions represent union, and the area inside U but outside A represents the complement of A. Diagram questions strengthen visual reasoning.
