What Are Integers?

Integers are whole numbers that include positive numbers, negative numbers and zero. Examples are …, -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Unlike fractions and decimals, integers do not contain a fractional part. On a number line, positive integers are to the right of zero and negative integers are to the left.

The number line is one of the most useful models for understanding integers. Moving right means increasing the value, while moving left means decreasing the value. The farther a negative number is from zero, the smaller its value.

Absolute Value Formula

|a| = Distance of a from 0

Absolute value tells how far an integer is from zero. Therefore |7| = 7 and |-7| = 7. Absolute value is never negative. It is useful when comparing the size of positive and negative quantities.

Adding Integers Formula

Same Signs: Add Absolute Values → Keep the Common Sign
