What Is Perimeter?
Perimeter is the total distance around the boundary of a two-dimensional figure. If a student walks around the edge of a playground, the distance covered represents its perimeter. Perimeter is measured in linear units such as millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres. Before calculating, identify every side that forms the boundary.
Rectangle
A rectangle has two pairs of equal opposite sides. If its length is l and breadth is b, add all four sides. This gives the standard perimeter formula.
Area measures the surface covered inside a figure. Rectangle area is expressed in square units such as cm² or m². Perimeter and area are different quantities: perimeter uses linear units, while area uses square units.
Square
A square has four equal sides. Because all four sides have the same length, its perimeter is four times the side. Its area is the side multiplied by itself.
Triangle
The perimeter of a triangle is found by adding its three side lengths. For area, a base and the corresponding perpendicular height are required.
The height must be perpendicular to the selected base. A sloping side should not automatically be treated as the height. This is a common source of mistakes in area questions.
Parallelogram
A parallelogram has two pairs of equal parallel sides. Its perimeter is obtained by adding all four sides, or by doubling the sum of two adjacent sides. Its area uses a base and perpendicular height.
Circle
For circle problems, the boundary is called circumference. The radius is the distance from the centre to the boundary, while the diameter passes through the centre and has endpoints on the circle.
Use the value of π specified by the question. If the problem asks for an exact answer, retain π; if it asks for a decimal approximation, use the stated approximation or a suitable value such as 22/7 when appropriate.
Units of Perimeter and Area
Linear measurements use units such as mm, cm, m and km. Area uses squared units: mm², cm², m² and km². Never write cm for an area answer or cm² for a perimeter answer.
The second conversion is important because both dimensions change when converting an area from metres to centimetres. For example, a square metre contains 100 cm × 100 cm = 10,000 cm².
Compound Shapes
A compound figure is made from two or more familiar shapes. Break the figure into rectangles, squares, triangles or other shapes whose formulas are known. Find each part's area and then add or subtract according to the diagram.
For perimeter of a compound shape, trace only the outside boundary. Internal dividing lines normally do not belong to the perimeter unless the question specifically asks for them.
Word Problems
Measurement word problems require more than a formula. First identify what the question asks: boundary distance, surface area, missing length, cost of fencing, flooring, painting or another quantity. Then list the known values and their units. Convert units when necessary before substituting into a formula.
Finding a Missing Dimension
Sometimes the area or perimeter is known and a side must be found. Rearrange the formula instead of guessing. For a rectangle, if area and length are known, divide area by length to obtain breadth.
If perimeter is known, divide the equation by two first and then isolate the missing dimension.
Perimeter vs Area
Perimeter answers “how far around?” while area answers “how much surface inside?” A fence around a garden uses perimeter. Grass needed to cover the garden uses area. Keeping this distinction clear prevents many errors.
