What Is Data?
Data is a collection of facts, measurements or observations. In Class 8 mathematics, data may be presented as a list of numbers, a frequency table or another organised representation. When the data concerns one numerical characteristic, we can study it using measures such as mean, median, mode and range. Careful organisation is important because the same numbers can look confusing when they are not arranged clearly.
Mean or Average
The mean is found by adding every observation and dividing the total by the number of observations. It gives one value that represents the centre of the data. When calculating a mean, count every observation correctly. If a value occurs several times, each occurrence contributes to the total.
For example, if the data is 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12, the sum is 40 and there are 5 observations, so the mean is 40 รท 5 = 8.
Median
The median is the middle value after the data has been arranged in ascending or descending order. Arrangement is essential. If there is an odd number of observations, one value lies exactly in the middle. If there is an even number, the two middle values are averaged.
Mode
The mode is the observation that occurs most frequently. A data set may have one mode, more than one mode or no mode if no value occurs more often than the others. Students should count repetitions rather than simply selecting the largest number.
Range
The range describes the spread from the smallest observation to the largest observation. Subtract the smallest value from the largest value. Range does not require adding all the observations, but the minimum and maximum values must be identified correctly.
Frequency
Frequency tells how many times an observation occurs. A frequency table places observations and their frequencies in an organised form. The sum of all frequencies equals the total number of observations. Frequency is useful when the same values repeat many times.
Reading a Data Set
Before calculating anything, read the entire data set. Check whether values are already ordered. If a question asks for the median, arrange the observations first. If it asks for mode, count repetitions. If it asks for range, locate the minimum and maximum. If it asks for mean, calculate the total and count observations.
Mean from a Frequency Table
When observations have frequencies, a useful method is to multiply each observation by its frequency and then add those products. Divide the total of the products by the total frequency. This prevents repeatedly writing the same observation.
Why the Number of Observations Matters
A common mistake is dividing the sum by the number of different values rather than the number of observations. For example, if 5 appears four times, all four occurrences must be included when finding the mean. In a frequency table, the denominator is the total frequency, not merely the number of rows.
Comparing Data Sets
Two data sets can have the same mean but different ranges, or the same range but different modes. A single measure does not always describe every feature of a data set. Mean gives an average, median gives a central position, mode identifies the most frequent value and range indicates the distance between extremes.
