What Are Exponents and Powers?
An exponent tells how many times a number or algebraic expression is used as a factor. In 25, 2 is the base and 5 is the exponent. The expression means 2 ร 2 ร 2 ร 2 ร 2. Exponents provide a compact way to write repeated multiplication and are especially useful when working with very large or very small numbers.
Product Law of Exponents
When powers have the same non-zero base and are multiplied, add their exponents. The base remains unchanged. This law makes long repeated multiplication much shorter.
Quotient Law
When powers with the same non-zero base are divided, subtract the denominator exponent from the numerator exponent. Always keep the order clear: the exponent of the denominator is subtracted from the exponent of the numerator.
Power of a Power
If a power is raised to another power, multiply the exponents. For example, (x3)4 becomes x12. Do not add the exponents in this situation because the operation is a power raised to a power.
Power of a Product
When a product is raised to a power, the exponent applies to each factor. This is helpful when simplifying expressions such as (ab)n.
Power of a Quotient
The same exponent applies to the numerator and denominator. Keep the fraction structure intact while applying the power.
Zero Exponent
Every non-zero number raised to the power zero equals 1. This rule is important when simplifying expressions after subtracting equal exponents.
Negative Exponents
A negative exponent indicates a reciprocal. In school-level problems, a negative exponent can be changed into a positive exponent by moving the base to the denominator.
Standard Form
Very large and very small numbers can be written conveniently using powers of 10. Standard form is written as a ร 10n, where a is at least 1 but less than 10 and n is an integer. Moving the decimal point to the left gives a positive power of 10; moving it to the right gives a negative power.
