What Is a Quadrilateral?

A quadrilateral is a closed plane figure made from four line segments. It has four sides, four vertices and four interior angles. The most important general rule is that the interior angles of every quadrilateral add up to 360°. Quadrilaterals can have equal or unequal sides, parallel or non-parallel sides, right angles or other angle measures.

How the 360° Rule Works

A diagonal can divide a quadrilateral into two triangles. Since the angles of each triangle add to 180°, the two triangles together have 180° + 180° = 360°. This is why the angle-sum rule works for every simple quadrilateral.

Parallelogram

A parallelogram is a quadrilateral in which both pairs of opposite sides are parallel. Opposite sides are equal, opposite angles are equal, and adjacent angles are supplementary. Its diagonals bisect each other. These properties allow missing sides and angles to be found quickly.

Rectangle

A rectangle is a special parallelogram with four right angles. Opposite sides are equal and parallel. Its diagonals are equal in length and bisect each other. Every angle measures 90°.

Rhombus

A rhombus is a parallelogram with all four sides equal. Opposite angles are equal and adjacent angles are supplementary. Its diagonals bisect each other at right angles, and the diagonals also bisect the opposite angles.

A square combines important properties of a rectangle and a rhombus. All four sides are equal, all four angles are 90°, opposite sides are parallel, and the diagonals are equal, bisect each other at right angles and bisect the vertex angles.

Trapezium

A trapezium is a quadrilateral with one pair of parallel sides. In some curricula, the term trapezoid is used instead. Always follow the terminology used in your textbook or examination. When a pair of parallel sides is crossed by a transversal, related interior angles can be supplementary.

Kite

A kite is a quadrilateral with two distinct pairs of adjacent equal sides. Its diagonals have useful perpendicular and symmetry properties. One diagonal can bisect the other, and one pair of opposite angles is equal when the equal-side pairs are arranged symmetrically.

Diagonals of Quadrilaterals

A diagonal joins two non-adjacent vertices. A quadrilateral has two diagonals. Diagonal properties help classify shapes: parallelogram diagonals bisect each other; rectangle diagonals are equal and bisect each other; rhombus diagonals are perpendicular and bisect each other; and square diagonals have all the key properties of both a rectangle and a rhombus.

Angles and Supplementary Angles

Two angles are supplementary when their sum is 180°. This idea is especially useful in parallelograms, where adjacent angles are supplementary. If one angle is 65°, its adjacent angle is 115°. Opposite angles remain equal, so the opposite angle is 65°.

Finding a Missing Angle

For a general quadrilateral, subtract the three known interior angles from 360° to find the fourth. For special quadrilaterals, use their additional properties. For example, if three angles are 80°, 95° and 105°, the fourth angle is 360° − 280° = 80°.

Classification: Use Properties, Not Appearance

A shape should be classified by its mathematical properties rather than by how it looks in a drawing. A square is also a rectangle and a rhombus because it has four right angles and four equal sides.
