Linear Equations – Class 9 Practice Guide

Linear equations are equations in which the variable has degree one. In Class 9 algebra, students also meet expressions containing powers, binomials and trinomials. A key skill is to simplify these expressions correctly before solving the resulting linear equation. What is a linear equation?

(x + a)(x + b) = x² + (a + b)x + ab

These identities help students expand or factor expressions quickly. For example, (x + 3)² becomes x² + 6x + 9. If an equation contains this expression, simplify it first and then collect like terms. This prevents sign and arithmetic mistakes.

How to solve expressions step by step

First remove brackets using the distributive property. Next combine like terms. If powers occur, evaluate known powers or substitute the given value when the question asks for a numerical result. Then move variable terms to one side and constants to the other. Finally divide by the coefficient of the variable. Check the result by substituting it back into the original equation.
