Addition and subtraction are essential Grade 6 skills because they appear in nearly every area of mathematics. Students use them when working with whole numbers, decimals, measurements, money, data, fractions and algebraic expressions. Fluency means being able to calculate accurately while understanding why the calculation works. Place Value Comes First
Before adding or subtracting large numbers, identify the value of each digit. In 483,725, the 4 represents 400,000, the 8 represents 80,000, the 3 represents 3,000, the 7 represents 700, the 2 represents 20 and the 5 represents 5. Correct place alignment prevents digits from being added to the wrong place.
Addition Formula
In addition, the numbers being combined are called addends and the result is the sum. For example, 3,482 + 2,615 = 6,097. Write numbers vertically when the problem contains several digits, lining up ones, tens, hundreds, thousands and larger places.
Subtraction Formula
In subtraction, the number you start with is the minuend, the number removed is the subtrahend and the result is the difference. For example, 7,250 − 3,418 = 3,832. Check that each place is aligned before beginning.
Regrouping in Addition
When the sum in one place is 10 or greater, regroup. For example, if the ones column produces 14, write 4 in the ones place and carry 1 ten to the tens column. The same process can continue through hundreds, thousands and higher places. A useful reminder is:
Regrouping in Subtraction
When the top digit is smaller than the digit below it, regroup from the next place. One ten becomes 10 ones; one hundred becomes 10 tens; and so on. For example, when subtracting 8 from 3 in the ones place, you may exchange one ten for 10 ones. Then 13 − 8 can be calculated. Keep track of the reduced digit in the place you borrowed from.
Adding Decimals
Decimal addition follows the same place-value rules as whole-number addition. The most important step is to align decimal points vertically. For example:
Writing 3.70 rather than 3.7 can make the place values clearer. Add tenths to tenths, hundredths to hundredths and so on. A decimal point in the answer should remain aligned with the decimal points in the original numbers.
Subtracting Decimals
For decimal subtraction, align the decimal points before calculating. Add zeros to the right when useful. For example, 8.50 − 2.75 = 5.75. Regrouping works exactly as it does with whole numbers, except the places can include tenths, hundredths and thousandths.
Estimation
Estimation helps students decide whether an exact answer is reasonable. Round each number to a convenient place and then calculate. For example, 4,892 + 2,107 can be estimated as 4,900 + 2,100 = 7,000. Estimation is especially useful for catching misplaced digits or calculation mistakes.
Missing Number Problems
Missing-number problems develop flexible thinking. Instead of calculating from left to right automatically, identify the unknown value. For example, □ + 2,450 = 6,000. The missing number is found by using the inverse operation: 6,000 − 2,450 = 3,550. The same idea works for subtraction.
Comparing Expressions
Some questions ask whether one expression is greater than, less than or equal to another. Calculate or estimate each side, then use >, < or =. For example, 4,500 + 200 > 4,600 because the left side equals 4,700.
Useful Mental Math Strategies
Students can simplify calculations by decomposing numbers. For example, 398 + 125 can become 400 + 125 − 2 = 523. In subtraction, compensation can also help: 700 − 298 is close to 700 − 300 + 2 = 402. These strategies are useful when calculations are performed mentally.
Checking an Addition Answer
One way to check addition is to use subtraction. If 2,345 + 1,250 = 3,595, then 3,595 − 1,250 should return 2,345. Estimation also provides a quick reasonableness check. If the numbers are approximately 2,300 and 1,300, the answer should be near 3,600.
Checking a Subtraction Answer
Subtraction can be checked using addition. If 5,000 − 1,875 = 3,125, then 3,125 + 1,875 should equal 5,000. If it does not, review the regrouping steps and place alignment.
