Measurement is the mathematical process of describing the size, amount, distance, area, capacity or duration of something using a number and a unit. Grade 6 students work with measurement in many forms, including length, mass, capacity, time and area. They also need to convert between related units and decide which unit is appropriate for a situation. Strong measurement skills help students solve practical problems involving shopping, cooking, travel, construction, science, sports and daily schedules.

What Is a Measurement Unit?

Measurement = Number × Unit

A measurement is incomplete without its unit. For example, 8 metres describes a length, while 8 kilograms describes a mass. The same number can represent very different quantities depending on the unit. Students should always read the unit carefully before calculating.

Length Conversion

1 km = 1,000 m   •   1 m = 100 cm   •   1 cm = 10 mm

Length measures distance. In the metric system, larger units can be converted into smaller units by multiplying, while smaller units can be converted into larger units by dividing. For example, 3.5 m = 350 cm because 3.5 × 100 = 350.

Mass Conversion

1 kg = 1,000 g   •   1 g = 1,000 mg

Mass describes how much matter an object contains. When converting kilograms to grams, multiply by 1,000. When converting grams to kilograms, divide by 1,000. For example, 4.2 kg = 4,200 g.

Capacity Conversion

1 L = 1,000 mL

Metric Conversion Rule

Larger unit → smaller unit: multiply

This rule works because a larger unit contains many smaller units. One metre contains 100 centimetres, so the numerical value becomes larger when metres are expressed in centimetres. Conversely, the numerical value becomes smaller when centimetres are expressed in metres.

Elapsed Time

Elapsed Time = End Time − Start Time

Suppose a lesson begins at 9:20 and ends at 10:05. The elapsed time is 45 minutes. Breaking the problem into convenient intervals can make it easier: 9:20 to 10:00 is 40 minutes, then 10:00 to 10:05 is 5 minutes.

Perimeter

Rectangle Perimeter = 2 × (Length + Width)

Perimeter measures the distance around a two-dimensional shape. For a rectangle with length 8 cm and width 5 cm, the perimeter is 2 × (8 + 5) = 26 cm. The answer must use a linear unit such as centimetres or metres.

Area

Rectangle Area = Length × Width

Area measures the amount of surface inside a two-dimensional shape. If a rectangle is 8 m long and 5 m wide, its area is 8 × 5 = 40 square metres. Notice that area uses square units, such as cm², m² or km².

A common Grade 6 mistake is confusing perimeter and area. Perimeter describes the boundary, while area describes the interior surface. Perimeter answers often use units such as metres; area answers use square metres. Looking for words such as “around,” “fence” or “border” can suggest perimeter, while “cover,” “floor,” “surface” or “inside” can suggest area.

Scale and Measurement

Scale distance × scale factor = actual distance

Maps and diagrams often use scale to represent real distances. If a diagram says 1 cm represents 5 km, then 4 cm represents 20 km. Students should keep the scale units consistent and multiply or divide according to what the problem asks.

Measurement Word Problems

Word problems require students to identify the unit, operation and information needed. A useful strategy is to underline the quantities, circle the units and write a short equation before calculating. For example, if a bottle contains 1.5 L and four bottles are used, the total is 1.5 × 4 = 6 L.
