Multiplication and division are core Grade 6 skills that support fractions, decimals, ratios, percentages, measurement, algebra and problem solving. Students need more than memorized facts: they need to understand place value, factors, products, quotients, remainders and efficient strategies. Multiplication Formula

Product = Factor × Factor

In multiplication, the numbers being multiplied are factors and the result is the product. For example, 24 × 6 = 144. When multiplying larger numbers, organize the numbers by place value and multiply one place at a time.

Distributive Property

a × (b + c) = (a × b) + (a × c)

The distributive property makes mental and written multiplication easier. For example, 36 × 7 = (30 × 7) + (6 × 7) = 210 + 42 = 252. Breaking a number into tens and ones can make a difficult calculation more manageable.

Place Value in Multi-Digit Multiplication

When multiplying by a two-digit or larger number, each digit represents a different place value. For example, multiplying 246 by 13 means multiplying by 3 ones and by 1 ten, then combining the partial products. The ten-place partial product is shifted one place to the left because it represents tens.

Division Formula

Dividend = Divisor × Quotient + Remainder

Long Division

Long division is a systematic method for dividing larger numbers. A useful sequence is Divide → Multiply → Subtract → Bring Down. Repeat these steps until every digit of the dividend has been used. Students should estimate the size of the quotient before starting so they can recognize an unreasonable answer.

Division With Remainders

When a dividend cannot be divided evenly, the leftover amount is the remainder. For example, 29 ÷ 5 = 5 remainder 4. Check it using the division formula: 5 × 5 + 4 = 29. The remainder must always be smaller than the divisor.

Checking Division

Multiplication provides a powerful check for division. If 156 ÷ 12 = 13, multiply 13 × 12 and confirm that the result is 156. For a remainder problem, multiply the quotient by the divisor and then add the remainder.

Mental Multiplication

Known facts can be extended to larger numbers. For example, 25 × 8 = 200 because 25 groups of 8 make 200. Students can also use multiplication by 10, 100 and 1,000 to shift place values:

n × 10 = 10n   |   n × 100 = 100n   |   n × 1,000 = 1,000n

Mental Division

Division by 10, 100 and 1,000 is also connected to place value. For whole numbers, dividing by these powers of ten shifts digits to lower place values. Students should focus on place value rather than simply memorizing a rule.

Estimation in Multiplication and Division

Estimate before calculating to predict the approximate answer. For example, 398 × 21 is close to 400 × 20 = 8,000. If an exact answer is nowhere near the estimate, check the calculation. Estimation is especially valuable with long multiplication and long division.

Missing Number Problems

Missing-number questions encourage students to think about inverse operations. If □ × 8 = 456, divide 456 by 8 to find the missing factor. If □ ÷ 9 = 42, multiply 42 by 9 to find the dividend.

Compare Expressions

When comparing two multiplication or division expressions, calculate both sides or use estimation. Use >, < or =. Comparing expressions develops number sense and helps students decide whether a calculation is reasonable.
