Place value is the foundation of the number system. In Grade 6, students move beyond simply reading whole numbers and decimals and begin working confidently with very large and very small quantities. A digit's position determines its value, and understanding that relationship helps students compare, round, calculate and represent numbers in different forms. What Is Place Value?
Place value tells us the value represented by a digit because of its position. For example, in 5,482,316, the 5 is in the millions place, the 4 is in the hundred-thousands place, the 8 is in the ten-thousands place, the 2 is in the thousands place, the 3 is in the hundreds place, the 1 is in the tens place and the 6 is in the ones place. Expanded Form

What Is Scientific Notation?
Scientific notation is a compact way to write very large or very small numbers. The general form is:
The first factor is called the coefficient and must have one non-zero digit to the left of the decimal point. The exponent shows the power of ten. For example, 4,500,000 = 4.5 ร 10โถ. The decimal point moved six places to the left, so the exponent is positive six.
Converting Standard Form to Scientific Notation
To convert a large number to scientific notation, move the decimal point left until only one non-zero digit remains before the decimal. Count the moves. That count becomes the positive exponent. For example, 72,000 = 7.2 ร 10โด because the decimal moves four places left.
Converting Scientific Notation to Standard Form
When the exponent is positive, move the decimal point to the right. For example, 3.6 ร 10โต = 360,000. Move five places and add zeros as needed. When the exponent is negative, move the decimal point to the left. For example, 4.2 ร 10โปยณ = 0.0042.
