Proportions are an important Grade 6 math topic because they help students describe situations in which two ratios are equal. What Is a Ratio?

Ratio: a comparison of two quantities using division.

A ratio can be written in several forms, such as 2:3, 2 to 3 or 2/3. The order matters. A ratio of 2:3 does not mean the same thing as 3:2. Ratios can compare quantities with the same units, and in practical problems the units should be interpreted carefully before calculating.

What Is a Proportion?

Proportion: an equation stating that two ratios are equal.
a/b = c/d

For example, 2/3 = 4/6 is a proportion because both ratios represent the same value. Proportions can be solved by finding an equivalent ratio, comparing unit rates or using cross multiplication. The most appropriate method depends on the numbers and the question.

Equivalent Ratios

a:b = (a×k):(b×k) for a nonzero whole-number scale factor k.

Multiplying both parts of a ratio by the same nonzero number creates an equivalent ratio. For example, 3:5 becomes 6:10 when both terms are multiplied by 2. It can also become 9:15 when both terms are multiplied by 3. The relationship between the two parts stays constant.

Finding a Missing Value

3/5 = x/20 → x = 12

To solve a missing-value proportion, look for the scale factor when possible. From 5 to 20, the factor is 4, so multiply 3 by 4 to get 12. This method is especially easy when one denominator or numerator is a clear multiple of the other number.

Cross Multiplication

a/b = c/d → a × d = b × c

Cross multiplication is a reliable strategy for solving proportions. Multiply the numerator of the first ratio by the denominator of the second ratio. Then multiply the denominator of the first ratio by the numerator of the second. Set the two products equal and solve for the unknown. For 3/4 = x/20, cross multiplication gives 3 × 20 = 4x, so 60 = 4x and x = 15.

Checking a Proportion

Cross products provide a quick way to check whether two ratios form a proportion. For 4/7 and 12/21, 4 × 21 = 84 and 7 × 12 = 84, so the ratios are equivalent. This is a valuable error-checking method after solving a problem.

Unit Rate

Unit rate = quantity ÷ number of units.

A unit rate tells how much corresponds to one unit. If 5 notebooks cost $15, the unit price is $15 ÷ 5 = $3 per notebook. Unit rates help students compare prices and solve proportional problems because they reduce a ratio to a “per one” comparison.

Using Proportions with Unit Rates

If a car travels 180 miles in 3 hours at a constant rate, its unit rate is 60 miles per hour. At the same rate, the distance in 5 hours is 60 × 5 = 300 miles. The same reasoning can be written as a proportion: 180/3 = x/5. Both methods use the assumption that the relationship stays proportional.

Scale Drawings and Maps

Scale factor = actual length ÷ drawing length

Scale drawings use proportional relationships to represent large objects on smaller paper. If a map says 1 centimeter represents 5 kilometers, then 3 centimeters represents 15 kilometers. Always check that the units match the scale before multiplying or dividing.

Proportion Word Problems

Many proportion questions describe real situations. A recipe may use 2 cups of flour for 8 servings and ask how much flour is needed for 20 servings. A proportional setup is 2/8 = x/20.
