BMR Calculator
Free Online BMR Calculator
DigiSadhan’s BMR Calculator is a free online tool that estimates your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) using basic information such as age, sex, height and weight. BMR represents the estimated amount of energy your body needs at rest to support essential physiological functions.
Your body continuously uses energy for functions such as breathing, circulation, maintaining body temperature and supporting normal organ activity—even when you are resting.
The calculator is useful for:
- Calorie planning
- Fitness tracking
- Weight-management planning
- Nutrition education
- Workout planning
- Understanding daily energy requirements
BMR is an estimate rather than a direct measurement. Actual energy expenditure can vary between individuals.
What is BMR?
BMR stands for Basal Metabolic Rate. It refers to the amount of energy required by the body to maintain essential functions under basal resting conditions.
BMR is different from Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). TDEE also considers physical activity and other components of daily energy expenditure.
For practical calorie planning, a BMR estimate can therefore be combined with an activity factor to estimate daily energy needs.
How to Use the BMR Calculator?
Using DigiSadhan’s online calculator is simple.

Click Calculate BMR to receive your estimated daily BMR in calories.
BMR Calculation Formula
DigiSadhan can use the Mifflin–St Jeor equation, a widely used predictive equation for resting energy expenditure. The original study was published in 1990 and developed the equation from 498 healthy subjects.
BMR Formula for Men
BMR = (10 × Weight in kg) + (6.25 × Height in cm) − (5 × Age) + 5
BMR Formula for Women
BMR = (10 × Weight in kg) + (6.25 × Height in cm) − (5 × Age) − 161
These formulas are also reproduced in clinical nutrition references.
Step-by-Step BMR Calculation Example
Suppose a 30-year-old man weighs 70 kg and is 175 cm tall.
Step 1 – Weight Component
10 × 70
= 700
Step 2 – Height Component
6.25 × 175
= 1,093.75
Step 3 – Age Component
5 × 30
= 150
Step 4 – Apply the Formula
BMR:
700 + 1,093.75 − 150 + 5
= 1,648.75 kcal/day
Estimated BMR:
≈ 1,649 calories per day
This means the equation estimates approximately 1,649 kcal/day under the conditions represented by the equation.
Example for Women
Suppose a 30-year-old woman weighs 60 kg and is 165 cm tall.
BMR:
(10 × 60) + (6.25 × 165) − (5 × 30) − 161
= 600 + 1,031.25 − 150 − 161
= 1,320.25 kcal/day
Estimated BMR:
≈ 1,320 calories per day
BMR vs TDEE
BMR is not the same as the number of calories you actually burn during a normal day.
BMR: Estimated energy requirement at basal rest.
TDEE: Estimated total daily energy expenditure, including physical activity.
A simple estimation approach is:
TDEE ≈ BMR × Activity Factor
Common activity multipliers used in calculators may include approximately:
| Activity Level | Example Multiplier |
|---|---|
| Sedentary | 1.20 |
| Lightly Active | 1.375 |
| Moderately Active | 1.55 |
| Very Active | 1.725 |
| Extra Active | 1.90 |
Activity multipliers are estimates and should not be interpreted as exact measurements of individual calorie expenditure.
TDEE Calculation Example
If estimated BMR is:
1,649 kcal/day
and an activity multiplier of:
1.55
is used:
TDEE:
1,649 × 1.55
= 2,555.95 kcal/day
Estimated TDEE:
≈ 2,556 kcal/day
This is an illustrative calculation, not a personalized calorie prescription.
Factors That Affect BMR
BMR and resting energy expenditure can vary because of factors such as:
- Age
- Body weight
- Height
- Sex
- Body composition
- Muscle mass
- Genetics
- Hormonal and metabolic conditions
- Health status
- Environmental conditions
Predictive equations cannot perfectly reproduce an individual’s measured energy expenditure. Research comparing prediction equations with measured resting expenditure demonstrates that estimates can differ from actual measurements.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does BMR mean?
BMR means Basal Metabolic Rate. It is an estimate of the energy your body requires to maintain essential functions under basal resting conditions.
What is the most commonly used BMR formula?
The Mifflin–St Jeor equation is one of the commonly used predictive equations for resting energy expenditure.
Is BMR the same as daily calorie needs?
No. BMR represents basal energy requirements. Daily calorie expenditure is generally higher because it also includes physical activity and other energy expenditure.
Can BMR change?
Yes. Changes in body weight, body composition, age and other physiological factors can affect resting energy expenditure.
Is a BMR calculator accurate?
It provides an estimate. Predictive equations cannot exactly measure an individual’s metabolism. Direct measurement, such as indirect calorimetry, can provide a measured resting energy expenditure.
Can BMR help with weight loss?
BMR can be used as one input when estimating overall energy requirements, but weight-management plans should consider total energy expenditure, nutrition, physical activity and individual health factors.
Is DigiSadhan’s BMR Calculator free?
Yes. DigiSadhan’s BMR Calculator is available as a free online tool for general informational, fitness and educational purposes.

BMR Calculation Formula
BMR = (10 × Weight) + (6.25 × Height) − (5 × Age) + 5
BMR = (10 × Weight) + (6.25 × Height) − (5 × Age) − 161
Calculation Example –
Age:
Weight:
70 kg
Height:
175 cm
Calculation:
10 × 70 = 700
6.25 × 175 = 1,093.75
5 × 30 = 150
अब:
700 + 1,093.75 − 150 + 5
= 1,648.75 kcal/day
Estimated BMR:
Calculation Example – महिला
Age:
Weight:
60 kg
Height:
165 cm
Calculation:
600 + 1,031.25 − 150 − 161
= 1,320.25 kcal/day
Estimated BMR:
TDEE ≈ BMR × Activity Factor
BMR = 1,649
Activity Factor = 1.55
TDEE:
1,649 × 1.55
≈ 2,556 kcal/day
- Age
- Weight
- Height
- Sex
- Muscle Mass
- Body Composition
- Genetics
- Hormonal Factors
- Health Status
